EnFAIT
Enabling future Arrays in Tidal
The EnFAiT project is a €20.2 million European programme that aims to increase the commercial viability of tidal power. The project involves a consortium of nine leading industrial, academic and research organisations, and it led by the Scots tidal energy firm Nova Innovation. The project runs until June 2022, and is a flagship initiative for the EU and the marine energy sector. It has been awarded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme to develop marine energy sources and demonstrate technologies in European waters. It will extend the existing Bluemull Sound array to six turbines, and demonstrate that high array reliability and availability can be achieved using best practice maintenance regimes. The layout of the turbines will be adjusted to enable array interactions and optimization to be studied for the very first time at an operational tidal energy site.It is hoped that the project will help the emerging technology develop into a standalone industrial manufacturing sector with a strong European supply chain, and make significant technological advances while lowering costs.
